New York State Museum
"Windows on New York" Exhibition
2001 Albany, New York

The first phase to be implemented of an extensive master plan, this exhibition offers the visitor a look in-at the Museum's mission of collecting and preserving the state's heritage, and a look out-at the Museum's research projects across the state.

An acrylic topo map of New York defines seven state regions with programmed internal lighting. Overhead, lenticular panels offer changing views of each. Throughout the gallery, each region is highlighted with its own exhibition "island" that displays a selection of the Museum's vast collections in Biology, Anthropology, Geology, and History. Visitors explore not only the treasures of the state, but also the efforts of the museum to preserve and interpret its heritage.

The gallery also offers visitors a break from museum fatigue. They can ride a restored 1895 carousel or have a snack at the New York State Fare eatery.

Andrew Merriell was the Principal in Charge of the design team for this exhibition. He also served as Principal in Charge of the team that crafted the museum's seventy million dollar master redevelopment plan. Both projects were performed while in the employ of Hilferty & Associates.
