Weedon Island Preserve
Cultural and Natural History Center
2002 St. Petersburg, Florida

Weedon Island Preserve, on the shores of Tampa Bay, not only protects a natural south Florida habitat, but also harbors the mystery of an ancient culture. Called the Weeden Island people after this site, these prehistoric Indians made some of the most exquisite and technically advanced pottery indigenous to the Americas. This National Register site contains shell middens, burial mounds and thousands of stone, bone and ceramic artifacts. In addition to the historical significance, Weedon Island is a thriving nature preserve and a destination for kayakers, birdwatchers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Exhibitions at the Weedon Island Cultural and Natural History Center offer visitors fascinating perspectives on the cultural and natural landscape of Weedon Island. Visitors enter different worlds, finding themselves transported a thousand years back in time or dwarfed by supersized representations of creatures from the Weedon Island ecosystem. After exploring the many experiences that await them at the Center, visitors leave with a deeper understanding and appreciation of this remarkable place.

Andrew Merriell was the Principal in Charge of the design team for this exhibition while in the employ of Hilferty & Associates.
