The Green Square Project is a planned mixed-use development that includes a new building for the State Employees' Credit Union, offices for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, retail space, restaurants, and parking. The heart of the development, however, is a new wing of the North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences to be known as the Nature Resource Center.

The Nature Resource Center (NRC) will function both to support the Museum's research and to interpret this research to the Museum's visitors. The challenge is to make both the process and the results of research as accessible to visitors as possible. Andrew Merriell & Associates worked with E. Verner Johnson & Associates, Architects to develop an Interpretive Concept Plan.

The interpretive plan examines issues of visitor experience, interpretive themes and messages, interpretive content topics, and tool and resources that are likely to be available to apply toward meeting interpretive goals. Each public area of the NRC is examined for interpretive potential. The report includes visitor flow diagrams, rough concept sketches, and reference images showing views of other institutions that have successfully implemented related ideas.
