The National Women's Hall of Fame
2006 Seneca Falls, NY

Founded in 1969, the National Women's Hall of Fame recognizes the accomplishments of great American Women. The Hall will soon move to a historic knitting mill complex on the banks of part of the Erie Canal system in Seneca Falls, the birthplace of the women's rights movement.

Our interpretive plan for the new building has visitors entering a brightly daylit atrium, which displays work of prominent woman artists and spotlights the most recent class of Hall of Fame inductees. First visits begin with an orientation experience in a multi-media theater. The orientation theater sets the stage for the main exhibition storyline: "Your Path to Greatness." Exiting the theater, visitors encounter an exhibition organized by the eight realms of achievement recognized by the Hall of Fame. In each of the eight theme areas visitors get recipes for success from great women through quotations, stories, and iconic objects. In each of these theme areas, a distinctive display honors inductees in that field.

Upon exiting the main gallery, visitors encounter exhibits on the history of the Seneca Mill building and its significance to the community and the nation. Beyond this exhibit is a comfortable reading room incorporating an alcove for the Book of Lives and Legacies, where visitors use state-of-the-art interactive technology to explore the stories of the remarkable women who are listed in the book.
