New York State Museum
Exhibition Master Plan
1999 Albany, New York

Once a leader among cultural and natural history museums, the New York State Museum is seeking to reestablish its prominence by infusing its exhibitions with the same excitement of discovery that has for so long fueled its research. Its permanent exhibitions had become dated, so the museum commissioned this plan to revamp more than 100,000 square feet of exhibition galleries at a cost of nearly $70 million.

Once implemented, the new exhibitions will cover a broader range of New York's cultural and natural heritage. Exhibitions will be more experiential and will employ a wider range of exhibit media.

Andrew Merriell was the Principal in Charge of this institution's new interpretive master plan while in the employ of Hilferty & Associates. He also served as the Principal in Charge of the design of the first phase of implementation of the plan, the "Windows on New York" exhibition.
