The Children's Museum of Utah
New Facility Master Plan
2002 Salt Lake City, Utah

The Children's Museum of Utah has provided a "doing place" for the children of Salt Lake City since 1983. In 2002 the museum was presented with the opportunity to participate in a new downtown development being built to coincide with the Winter Olympics. In response to this opportunity, the museum plans to reinvent itself as a project-based institution.

The major components will be "World Project Central," where children will have the opportunity to explore the world as it is today and make a difference in the world that will be tomorrow; the "Apprentice Space," where experts and novices join hands to play, learn, and work together; a Junior Achievement Enterprise Village; and "The Journeys," a series of interactive exhibits in art, science, and humanities. The intention is for children to define and create much of what the museum will become.

Although employed by Hilferty & Associates at the time, Andrew Merriell was sought by the museum as an individual consultant, and personally performed the interpretive planning work.
